Rachel Foster is a Postdoctoral Researcher at the University of California at Santa Cruz. Her research focuses on the diversity and distribution of planktonic symbioses. In particular, she is most interested in diatoms which harbor symbiotic N2-fixing cyanobacteria. On the cruise, she will be running experiments to investigate the rapidity of nutrient exchanges (nitrogen and carbon) between symbiotic partners. These experiments will also quantify and identify differences in the cell-specific carbon and nitrogen fixation rates for the various symbioses.
